Poetry

I love poetry, reading it and writing it. I find that somethings are just said better in a poem. A poem is able to touch and uplift the heart. It can carry a message that no person wishes to utter. Poetry may not cause the world to change, but it does allow things to be thought about and presses people to make the change they want to see. We even find poerty in scripture, the Psalms are a great example of that. So why not turn to Psalms the next time you need uplifting?

Perfect Mistake

Tiny fingers meant to grip life's laughter
were stilled to become death's dream.
Hush 'abye baby, close your eyes,
never from your sleep to rise.
You weren't granted childhood's play,
your life being ended before you saw day.
What God gave you, your mother did take,
for you were a perfect mistake...

Reflections
I walk down an alley,
a thin concrete valley
filled with voices
devoid of dreams.
Dreams that once were
now reduced to a
stack of shattered silhouettes
cluttering reality
like sinister soliloquies.
How many are the tears
once spilt on this tar
only to be trampled
underfoot by
passers - by?
Only fears drift here
in a film of sultry smoke.
What if people built
their lives on
the Rock?
Then, perhaps, the
graffiti on the walls
would cease to be
a poetry of pain.
People would smell
renewal in the rain,
ridding themselves
of the sordid springs
watering their thirsty souls.
In a lifetime past,
the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us.
He perceived all the
pieces of pain now
painted on this pavement.
He poured out himself
as the spring of separation
from all things sordid.
If we build our dreams on
this rock,
their houses will not be divided.
They will stand...

The Knots Prayer

Dear God:

Please untie the knots

that are in my mind

my heart and my life.

Remove the have nots,

the can nots and the do nots,

that I have in my mind

Erase the will nots,

may nots,

might nots that my find

a home in my heart.

Release me from the could nots,

would nots and

should nots that obstruct my life.

and most of all,

Dear God

I ask that you remove from my mind,

my heart and my life all the 'am nots'

that I have allowed to hold me back,

especially through thought

that I am not good enough.
